How do I set up roaming on my phone

Go into settings and click on Roaming and Data roaming to turn on.

If travelling outside the EU, turn off Voicemail. Guide: All you need to know about O2 Voicemail 901 

and also use Wifi when possible. Again, if outside the EU you can download Whatsapp and Messenger and use that over Wifi for free.
