I placed an order for a device earlier today. It said my order was with the credit team for further review.
a few hours later I received a text message from O2UK saying:
Hi, it's O2. We need to do a quick security check on your recent order. Call us on 0800 052 9455 8am–8pm Mon–Fri or 9am–5pm Sat–Sun from your main O2 phone number.
I called, they asked for a couple of security bits and text me a code which I relayed. I figured I called them rather than them calling me - they also had some details of the order I placed. once they validated, I logged in and it says the order was approved and I could check out.
Afterwards I wanted to be 100% sure it was legit. I contacted O2 who said:
- they never sent the text according to their records
- the number in the message is not an O2 CS number
- however there was a record they called out to ME to validate. Which I never had.
my gut suggests a mismatch in what O2 CS are saying and what happened. Especially since the text, order, call and approval all line up. However I’m still a bit confused why O2 think the number isn’t theirs?
anyone able to validate?
if you call the number it says it’s explicitly for order security checks.

Standard process.
It's just an incompetent advisor you spoke to when you called back.

It's an identity check so will ask your name address, DOB and card details you used to place the order with @Buffyfan2014uk
