For clarity, this was "the" app that was widely used which although still on Play, does not continue to work without faffing about with it (according to the comments).

Good news. I managed to authenticate the app using the browser method so all is up and running again now slight_smile
There's no way it would continue to sync without doing this though, so thanks for prompting me to check this out wink

It's weird because I never did anything at all. When you told me it didn't work I wasn't bothered about checking but all my texts going back at least the last 12 months are all backed up. In fact there are still some there from years back.

You must have done a web authentication then.
It prompts you to do that if the token authentication fails due to Googles security policy.
This looks like a new addition in the last app update.
