There are  guides here on travelling abroad

https://www.o2.co.uk/shop/international/using-phone-in-europe

http://www.o2.co.uk/international/internationalhub

Also use wifi wherever possible. I have just returned from Spain and had mobile data and data roaming turned off most of the time. WiFi was freely available in many places

I kept in touch with family by using Skype Whatsapp and messenger. All free with Wifi

Also turn voicemail off before you travel

Switch off mobile/cellular data and use wifi only where possible. Many free apps allow you to make free calls and texts using wifi, Messanger, whatsapp, Skype, Line and Tango to name a few although both caller and receiver need to have the app.

If you are monthly contract use TuGo over wifi to use your contract allowances.

Switch off voicemail before you leave the UK.
