I recently watched a video on Facebook about technology 'ruining' society.

http://themetapicture.com/if-this-doesnt-convince-you/

For those of you who are sceptical about clicking on the link or just don't want to watch the video, I'll summarise it:

  • There's a main story whereby a man is lost and needs directions. He stops a random woman in the street to ask her where he needs to go. They have an instant attraction and fall in love, get married, have children and live happily ever after. The video then goes back to the beginning and instead of the man holding a piece of paper stating where he needs to go, he uses his phone to find directions and he walks past the woman in the street (the one who could have been his future wife and mother of his children) - I admit a tear came to eye at this point.
  • The moral of that story is that we don't realise the opportunities we miss by having our heads glued to our phones, laptops, tablets, smart watches, etc.
  • There are also clips in the video of people sitting in their room on their own on their laptop instead of going out and socialising with friends. Also, our minds are it expanding as much as we would if we were spending our time being creative (e.g. drawing)

The topic of technology in society is hugely debatable.

My view is that technology is affecting society.

I admit I am surrounded by technology - if I'm not on my iPhone I'm on my watch. If I'm not on my watch I'm on my iPad. If I'm not on my iPad then on my my laptop. Sometimes I get so into the technology that I don't even notice my surroundings.  I'd rather Google directions than ask a random stranger for directions.  I'd rather Google a restaurant than look in the Yellow Pages and give them a call.  I'd rather play Bingo online than go to a Bingo hall and socialise. I'm sure people think this is 'sad' but if everyone thought about it then they probably do the same in some way.

Approximately two decades ago, mobile phones were relatively new and people were worry about using them. Nowadays, technology is part of every day life. People who work in retail have to have knowledge of technology to use their tills. Computer skills is usually a requirement needed for a job or educational course.

The younger generation expect technology. People are being put into more debt due to them confusing their need with their want.

School children tend to be bullied more if they do not have the latest technological device.

Also, bullying as a whole has now gone from physical to cyber and that is dangerous. A person could bully someone who is in a different city or even a different country and that is very scary.

I recently discussed the above video with my friend and, although she agrees with my view partly (that technology is ruining today's society), however, she also noted that one of her friends met her future husband online and they have been happily together for many years.

So there are pros and cons to having so much technology in society.

Technology does get in the way of communication. As much as I text, I prefer to talk to people. Guilty of using my phone a lot to organise my life though however it does pay me dividends.

Just to pick up on the bullying, with online you have the choice not to look, change accounts etc. There is also a good change your parents will see this and take action to stop it, rather than you getting picked on just at school. But yeah, I do agree it can, does and will only continue to get in the way. But it also opens up new possibilities.

I recently watched a programme about cyber bullying and it told the stories of young people being bullied on various social media. It questioned why people should hangs their account just to avoid these bullies, would who probably resurface on a new account as the same people or of a new person.

According to a survey, 56% of young people are aware of bullying being done to other young people online. A scary figure. I predict that the figure for reporting it is a lot lower than that!

With the evolution of technology, the Government has laws to combat bullying via technology.

It's the sad truth that, like many other laws, it doesn't do what it's supposed to do.
