If I am on a pay monthly contract and have unlimited texts in the UK, and My friend is on an EE contract and has unlimited texts in Berlin, would it be free to text each other or would it cost and if so how much?

It is always free to text a uk mobile from the uk and it is always free to receive a text anywhere in the world. However, if you send a text when roaming, ie not on your home network, you will be charged, so your friend in Germany will be charged for texting you back in the uk (assuming you mean their network is EE uk?)

Thank you so much, and is this the same for calls? So if I ring him it will be free for both?

Has he got EE EuroPass for roaming enabled?  It;s a bit expensive to use but these are the costs to call without it

No, not the same for calls.
You can call at normal UK rates but the roaming phone will be charged to receive the call and also to make calls from Germany back to UK.

@Anonymous It is free for you, but not for your friend in Germany. See the link @Cleoriff has posted and the advice @MI5 has given you.
