I have to drive 3 miles away to the local sainsburys to pick up a signal (3G, no GPRS).
Does anyone know what could be wrong?

So choices 1 book an apple genius appointment and get them to look at it. 2 take to nearest o2 shop and let them send it away. 3 do an advance replacement.
All info in my links
And I disagree that the iphone technical thread is of no use, that is the place to post iphone related queries.

I've replaced the sim with a colleagues and that has no effect. Can I just get a replacement from an o2 store?

It is of some use, just not to my issue.

How old is you iphone as if over 28 days they will send it away takes 14 days and watch out for the water damage indicators.(info in sig links)
My point was if you posted your issue in the iphone technical thraed it would not get lost in general o2 issues.

The tests I've tried so far:
Soft Reset
Hard Reset
Replacing the sim with a colleagues
Updating the firmware
Resetting network settings via Settings > General > Reset
Turning off 3G
Turning off Wireless
Switching on and off Airplane mode
Resetting settings in Celular Data Network
None have any effect.
The phone works when in a very well covered area, such as a city. It works in Gloucester city centre for example on 3G and GPRS.
It doesn't work in Stonehouse (my work place) where there is average signal. However all iPhones here at work fine, apart from mine.
At home (HR8), where there is intermittent 3G availability, signal is very erratic. Only when 3G is enabled does it seem a bit more stable.
I just find it strange as to why all my work colleagues have an O2 signal and I dont?

I know it can be a trek my nearest are over 30 miles (bristol/southampton) away but traveled to one 60 miles away(exeter) to get a quick appointment when one of ours went wrong (it was a quicker drive as well) in and out of the store in 10 mins with fully working replacement.
I would also edit out the postcode you posted the mods do not like that sort of thing being posted.
