So you are a new O2 customer? Have you read that help thread I linked to?

New customers
If you're new to O2, your sim will already be active and ready to use. Just pop it in your phone and you're good to go.

If it isn't working then you need a new sim..quicker to pop instore

@Anonymous If you have an O2 store nearby you, and have the time to go there, that might be the easiest way for you to get your phone up and running. They should be able to do this for you.

This would be a job for Customers Services. OP probably won't be able to get past DPA in a store in this instance.

@PhoneDoc are you saying that if the OP went in store with their receipt from O2 for the purchase of the phone, and all the documentation to prove that they are who they are, that a store wouldn't be able to provide the OP with a new blank sim and a 'guru' wouldn't be able to help them get the phone up and running? That's absurd! The OP has said that they're not very good technically. Where would they have to go for help?
