abused by international data roaming with an iphone

News about to go around the web:
-----------
Please please please may you write an article on how o2 people are being abused by international data roaming with an iphone. I have an o2 iphone and work in France, the unlimited data policy does not cover anything outside of the UK, and ALL data packages offered by o2 are not available for iphone users. Which means I can use my iphone abroad - BUT with a charge of 7.05gbp per Mb. Which means an average of 140gbp a month, which really means I would be stupid to use my iphone overseas, which means for any travel it is as useful as a nokia 2110.

Many thanks,

Had a call from O2 yesterday, out of the blue. Told me about the size of the bill racked up by having data roaming on for the iPhone. Exception in this case and they have refunded me the amount I was charged while in France.

The said this is a one off and if it happens again, my fault. Remember to switch off Data Roaming in furture they said......

What more could I ask for. Customer satisifed.

They keep me as a long term customer.......

It is such a pity that a phone so reliant upon data usage has no product offering from O2 for data roaming.

The £7.05 per megabyte is just a rip off. Who could justify or even afford paying for that per megabyte.

Rip us off for the time that they can until the OFCOM or what ever finally do something about it and stop this type of behaviour. It is greed and profiteering.

I can honestly say O2 have made a difference in this case for me and I have learned my lesson, but others need to be warned about it.

A data roaming and Call roaming package would be nice for International roaming which is priced accordingly and affordable.

The networks have invested heavily and need a return on that investment, but open it up with good pricing and people will pay to use it. It's like building a toll road and charging £400 to use it. Great product, but people will try to avoid using it due to the charge, therefore they never recoupe their investment.

O2 on the iphone is the uK are taking big strides. Lowering costs and increasing the minutes/text etc an d of course the unlimited data.

I'm in for the long run with O2 for as long as these customer serevice initiatives improve. I also think 02 are tied a bit by the other networks in Europe and their ridiculous pricing.

I finally got through to someone who could help me and also told me that 0870 6072302 is the number for iPhone billing. They have acknowledged that my data charges were unreasonable, giving the learning curve which both o2 and its iPhone customers are going through. I have been promised a refund for Dec and Jan, I will see what happens but it has reinstalled my faith in o2. However, I now have ensured that Data Romaing is always on OFF and so kind of kills the idea of having a data dependant mobile device! I will wait until o2 offer an international data roaming package like AT&T do or unlock the phone and move to another network provider.

Hmm unfortunatly I also de-activate my data roaming which means for a large portion of every week my iphone is useless. Come on O2 give us an international data roaming bundle! Or a fairer price! :robotindifferent:

I too have this problem and have contacted O2. It's ridiculous as you don't know how much you're spending until they land you with the bill. They advised me to go online and check - obviously forgetting that that will cost me a fortune to find out how much I'm spending.

What I can't understand is why they're refunding some customers while admitting unreasonable charges and not others.

Hi there,

Yup, no data roaming means you cannot surf the web, cannot download emails. (unless you login to a network with wireless LAN.)

thanks Glynn , beginning to understand - my iPhone activated fully yesterday and everything has fallen in to place , until today!!!

I keep getting the "couldn't activate edge" when i check for my mail - im currently in spain - could it be a problem with the network ? sometimes when i refresh it for new mail , the spinning wheel just goes on for ever and no message is displayed until it stops and says at the bottom last updated at "x" time...... this is really frustrating as i need to access my emails instantly , not have them arriving at intermittent times

can anyone help?

I think, un-confirmed though, that not all cell phone towers/networks can support edge. It could be you are in a remote area or using a cell network that doesnt support edge?

An idea would be to create a Gmail account and forward your emails to Gmail, as Gmail to iphone is a push email account. That way you get the email immediatly, as opposed to having to pull the email with a conventional email account and gprs/edge.

Use the wireless LAN to download emails where possible.
