Left O2 about 4/5 years ago. Bought a pay&go sim for daughter and trying to get it topped up is ridiculous. After the on line chat of going round in circles I realised why i left. I now have to wait upto 7 days to find out why the sim is not updating.....I think not.

It doent say that on the sim pack. It says insert sim and top up on the web or diall 4444, also, The on-line chat and actual human being i managed to get through to eventually didnt say that - so your wrong.
And if you aren't wrong, O2 is still as crap at comms as usual as the staff dont know what theyre doing.

No @Anonymous We are not wrong. I did the guidelines and it became apparent that a voucher was the way to go for a first top up. (which is why I highlighted it in red) O2 staff will say different but if you try a voucher then you will see it will top up...
After the first top up via voucher... you are able to use any of the other methods mentioned in the guide
