Upgrade as a sharer

Anonymous

HI Guys,

Is it possible to upgrade a phone which has no data in its own tariff but is using data from another device. All the upgrade tariffs seem to come with data. I would like to upgrade the phone but not change my tariff...which is minutes and texts only

I had this conversation just yesterday.

Live chat was a nightmare and so is the new automated service to put you through to the right department over the phone.

Anyway, I was trying to change one of my tablets to share data off my main lead device like I do with another tablet.

But because I got the tablet separately on Refresh, I have to pay off the tablet first and upgrade to a

"member sharer data tariff" in order to do it.

If you don't specifically ask for that they'll asume you'll want the tablet to be the sharer and mess things up. As also shows up when trying to change to sharer via MyO2 whilst still in contract.

As it stands once the device is out of contract or sim only you can do this via MyO2 without having to call up.

Incidentally, in case anyone didn't know, it costs £7.50 per month for a tablet to share from the lead device and £16.50 (?) per month for a phone to share off a lead device. But you get the unlimited calls and texts (or whatever the lead phone has) to share, whereas tablets can only share data and get their own additional 100 texts to use.

Hope this helps.

The only way you could do that is to buy the phone you want outright and put your current sim card in it.
Any O2 phone or unlocked / sim free phone would be fine.

Not possible by upgrading through o2. You would have to choose  an existing tariff.

You can upgrade to another phone with no data an use the leader persons data - at point of upgrade - just point this out to the advisor and they would choose the plan that has no data - then they do the upgrade as normal - then when you get the phone - contact customer services who then attach it to the leader plan who has the data

Call 202 to do the upgrade though - id avoid live chat as that might confuse them as to what your asking.

Sadly things didn't pan out the way way they were supposed to.

In the event not only have I paid off my device and am now on a rolling 30 day contract, I can't add the device as a member data sharer to my main/lead device.

Another device/contract I have which is on SIM Only I can however.

I have to upgrade instead. I can only change the device to a lead sharer device online or over the phone.

And due to 'training issues' at present I even spoke with an adviser in customer service who are supposed to do this for you who said I had to pay off and upgrade my main/leader device also. That is totally incorrect!

I ended up demanding to be put back through to retentions (who you speak with to pay off your device early incidentally) and cancelled both my sharer contracts. They only do that. You have to go back and speak with Customer Services to make any changes to your account. So they told me.

And because the adviser was not explaining the situation correctly to Retentions they wouldn't take the call. So I had to hang up and redial and go through the whole rigermerole of getting through to right person again.

Stick that o2! You're not worth the time money or hassle!

I wouldnt advise anyone to go down this Sharer route unless you set it up with new devices on Refresh from the start and if you add devices later make sure they're Sim Only.
