The iPhone 4 Upgrade Offer

Anonymous
Not applicable
Hi, i know this may have already been posted and answered, for that i apologies.

But basically at the moment im reading mixed reports that o2 are offering the upgrade to all customers still under contact and other reports stating that this offer only applies to those who are under an iPhone contact.

Im hoping the latter is not the case as my contact run out in January and i stated as i knew the iPhone 4 would be coming out in the near future that i would want to get this upon its release. The gentleman who done my upgrade said that this would be fine and basically describe what by the looks of things is the special limited time offer that o2 are going to offer, the only thing is though the upgrade i got, gave me a blackberry as i already had the 3gs.

So to sum up im just wondering if anyone knows of the criteria of this special upgrade? or am i just being inpatient?

Thanks

Lloyd

My contract ends in Sept 2011 but if I'm a platinum customer and can upgrade 6 months early, does that mean I only have to pay 9 months to buy my contract out instead of 15 months?

No, you can either pay out till the full end of the contract or wait until your platinum upgrade date.

Well i was talking to one of o2's customer service guys on the online chat and he told me that if i was to buy out my contact come the time of release it would be £420 but with this new early upgrade offer it works out to be £240 plus i would get £174 for my old iPhone which at that point puts me at a loss of £66 but then as has been stated i would have to buy the iPhone 4 and enter a new 18/24 month contact. I think it just comes down to if you really want the phone or not.

So I guess that means another round of ditching inclusive MMS in exchange for unlimited texts. Think I'll wait until my renewal date on 31st August.

Does annoy me networks have dropped that... best I can find are "O" give 50 (Inc in Dolphin plan) and "V" 100 (for £2.50 a month more).

My Mrs got a 3Gs, took a while to notice which she got unlimited txts, she had to pay for MMS, not happy.

O2 and the others, give us MMS inclusive back! Yes there's email, but we've all got friends and relatives with old non-email phones don't we?

Also, from the way I read it, this "Early Upgrade" sounds more like "Early contract refresh", able to end contract early and get a brand new one. Hence not renewal discount off the phone, and iPhone 4 won't be free, certainly not the largest capacity model. Unless Steve's gone mad after his press conference. Need more info on Tarifs (bring back Inc MMS!) and cost of phone. I'm not doing a £75 a month tarif to get the phone free either.

Having said that, my 32GB 3GS is mint so should fetch £253 via the recycle option making it £266, which is still pretty hefty but a bit easier to swallow 😐

Chris - You'll make between £350-£400 for it on eBay at the moment (I recently got £400 for my white 32gb 3gs), so I wouldn't use the recycle scheme!!! That should make the price of the new one a lot easier to manage!

I've just had a quick peek at the recycle scheme, out of interest. My HTC desire would sell for £148.50. I could realistically get twice that on eBay (take a look)... It's a no brainer!

I guess it depends on each customer's individual situation. I'm on a £25 per month tariff, so the "special" early upgrade offer really isn't that great for me. And I guess in terms of recycling/ebaying your existing handset, again that works out OK for folks with, say an iPhone 3GS, but as I only (!) have a Nokia 5800 which would fetch around £70, I would guess I'm still looking at an upfront payment upwards of £200 for the privilege of giving my business to o2 for the next 18/24 months.

Think I'll just be sitting out the remainder of my contract, then getting a free HTC Android handset...on another network
