Ofcom went out to consultation earlier this year with regard to the above the decission is in this document

https://www.ofcom.org.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0019/107254/Repeaters-Statement-2017.pdf

I guess this decission must have been known to the mobile phone companies and we await the dates of the start of the use of the spectrun in 2018 by Authorised compliant boosters

https://www.ofcom.org.uk/consultations-and-statements/category-2/mobile-phone-repeaters note until then all boosters not supplied by the networks are still ilegal and subject to fines

Three or four years ago relaxing the rules around boosters would have been really useful, however I'm of the opinion that the roll out of Wi-Fi calling across all networks will quickly negate the need for these devices in most circumstances.

That holds true unless you are with O2 whereby you need a new expensive phone and you don't use text.
