O2 Edge Network

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hi guys,

Quick question. I was always led to believe that the Edge network was faster than the 2G network. However each time my iPhone 4S switches to Edge (E) the connection is so slow that not even an iMessage can send. I have reset network settings - this hasn't helped. This is also the case in different areas of the country.

Any ideas?

Edge 2.g is faster than basic gprs 2g data but not as fast as 3g.

If happening in all areas you get edge not an obvious network issue you will need to talk to o2 about it.

They suggested resetting network settings. This didn't work. I will hopefully have  a new sim and phone on Friday, so will see how this pans out.

Edge is an Enhancement of the 2G network.

G = GPRE which is 2.5G

E = Enahnced Which is 2.75G

However I have found in the past that on occasions that being on the Edge Network isnt any faster or greater than O2 G's Network.

I would report it to o2 if you are having issues in your area and see if they can look at the local mast for you.

Need Help, Just ask. We are one big Family here in the o2 Forum.
Use iPhone XS Max dual sim, SE, Honor 10, IPad Pro 11, Apple Watch 4 LTE, 100+ Mpbs Barrier and a Record Player.

EDGE is roughly about 2 or 3 times (in practice as network latency provides some division in speed).

It stands Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution just in case you need to know. The UK standard is around 236Kb/s (which is about 30K/s). As opposed to 14.4Kb/s.

When I'm in certain locations like banks I get an Edge signal, which in reality is boosting my G signal.

The fastest current network (with the exception of a fully functional 4G network) is HSPA+. I've only managed to use this once and the speeds were very usable. However I hope you get the issue sorted.
