O2 3G coverage

Anonymous

For the past 5 years i've been on Orange and always been very happy with the 3G signal i've had - i live in Stafford and work in Telford and never really had anything less then full 3G coverage in these areas. I moved to O2 because of the iphone but O2's 3G coverage appears to be really way behind that of other networks - Stafford has NO 3G coverage at all ! Even their "future o2 coverage" map shows no plans for stafford. Telford does have coverage but minimal. Why are O2 so far behind ? To say it's disappointing would be an understatement. I dont really understand why apple would agree to market the iphone with a mobile network who has the worst 3G coverage out of all of them.

I too have been very disappointed with O2 and the 3G network performance and I live and work in London - however I get the impression that O2 don't really care, I also don't think we as contract customers have many options other than to either buy our way out and leave or to just serve the contractual term. I will probably do the latter but the one thing I am certain of is that I will never return to O2 again at the end of this current term.

GREAT NEWS!!!

No its nothing of O2's doing, heaven forbid they invest in a decent 3g network,. Vodafone have applied for permission to erect a brand shiney new 3g mast inbetween my home and place of work.

Just gotta hope that it goes ahead without too many grannys complaining about the little old cancer issue so that i can sit down and go about my business in the works toilets browsing the internet at speeds god intended!!

After 14 years of O2 loyalty it's time for a change, only 11 months of contract to go!

oh forgot to mention:

Ofcom has today confirmed that mobile operator O2 has now met its obligation to roll out its 3G services to at least 80 per cent of the UK population.
This follows Ofcom's notice to O2 in February that it would shorten its licence by four months if it did not comply with its rollout obligation by June 30 2008.
The rollout obligation requires each of the five holders of a 3G licence to roll out their networks to enable the provision of 3G services to at least 80 per cent of the population from 31 December 2007.
Ofcom will conduct a further assessment to ensure that these licensees remain in compliance on 31 December 2008.

so looks like the cheque cleared then!!! Smiley Mad

good post by Bananamal in the mobile broadband thread showing ofcom 3g coverage maps for all networks.

http://forum.o2.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=23201&highlight=coverage

as you can see o2 is still lagging behind.

its funny how there putting so much money into advertising the 3giphone when its clear it cant be fully utilised in most areas of the country.

so if you live in wales or scotland you can pretty much forget about surfing the web at speed!!!

I live in the Telford area and the 3G signal is fine within the Telford Town Centre and surrounding areas where i work/live.

However if you go to smaller towns in the Telford area like Oakengates, Madeley then i get no 3G signal at all. Wellington is hit and miss also.

Hence the reason why i'll probably be signing up to a new contract with Orange or Vodafone in February if there 3G coverage is any better in the Telford area.

I live in Cardigan West Wales. We have okay 2g coverage. Only in very remote places do we loose signal completely.
I pay the same rates as everyone else, however, I don't even get EDGE. Y'know the data service that was supposed on my iPhone, 4 years ago.

Nice old thread you have resurected.
Well
I live in a non edge area also only 2g gprs but that is out of personal choice of living in the countryside.
O2 are spending £1.25 million a day improving things.
Think how much they had to pay for the 3g licence and work out how many days of investment that took.
I would advise getting a payg sim for each network and find one that gives what you want (for me none of them and o2 best for 2G)
O2 are now rolling out 900mhz 3g and could as soon as the next auction has take place 2012 roll out 4g lte in a short timescale (due to te base stations o2 have been installing) but again the areas with high density of users will get that first.
