No help at all

I have a contract with O2 which is ending at the end of the month which is only a couple of weeks but my phone is not working properly, I asked if it was possible for an early upgrade but I got a big fat NO. Looks like I will be going elsewhere for a new contract.

Miscommunication again I think, live chat is useless. Speak to cs on 202 & you will get a better answer there

That doesn't sound right at all, but if you are leaving, you have to give 30 day's notice. After your contract expires it automatically becomes a one month rolling contract, so you have to give notice.

I DO NOT WORK FOR O2

You're not getting it confused with the one month upgrade before the end of the actual term? But as above, you don't get an earlier upgrade unless you spend lots of money.

Did you use the web chat service ? You can upgrade now simply by paying the extra month to see you through to the end of your current contract.

Completely true in that you can't "upgrade" but you can pay off your contract which sounds like 1 month max and start a new one with a new phone and port your current number across if you want to keep it.
