I wish I didn't change providers! Ive had my phone not even 2 weeks and its telling me my data is nearly done! How when I use wifi 70% of the time plus i did as instructed by o2 and switched off my data when I get home. This is ludicrous. I may end up giving back the phone and cancelling the contract as im still within my 14 days.

This issue often happens when things are downloading/being downloaded with or without your knowledge when you are in a non wifi area. Youtube videos are usually typically large files especially if running over 4G. Things such as emails/facebook are not big data applications. Usually video related. There are also apps you can download from your app store (with it being play store, app store, windows store etc) which can tell you what your mobile data is being used on.

You are quite within your rights to cancel if you wish, but can I ask how much data you have on your tariff please ?
I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

True though setting up a new phone can and will use data if not in WiFi range. Which is why the question was asked about the tariff the OP is on...

Its not about switching off data when home, it's about switching on data only when you need it.
All social media apps will kill data, as will media streaming sites.
As @cleoriff & @MI5 said, how much data do you get?

@Anonymous android itself will tell you what app has used data and how much.
I think the best advice will come once we have a better understanding of the ops data plan and usage.

You can set YouTube to only play low resolution on mobile data, it's in YouTube settings.
It will reduce data use significantly.
I'd also ring cs and see if they could upgrade your data plan a little. they may do it for minimal cost if it meant keeping a customer who was within cancellation period.

Thanks you were right 🙈☹️ Just got off the phone to them. Ive never had a limit on data usage before always had unlimited so this is all new to me.
