Thanks abs at least I know know it is only a recent thing not 2 years as suggested on one of the websites discussing the issue. I hope the ico is not too hard on o2 as you have acted promptly once made aware of the issue.

The concern now is that the number is shared with so-called "trusted partners." I would like to know:
a) which partners?
b) is this common to all networks?
c) why we were not informed and given the option to opt out?

Possibly somebody buggered up the gateway settings as the IP header in question has been about for years!
