HTC Desire 20 Meg Update

I have had an update come through today but it will not install. The download works fine but my phone hangs after rebooting and I have to go into the recovery menu to reboot the phone. I'm on O2 and the Phone has not been rooted.
Can anyone offer any assistance?

Yup - exactly the same here. The update downloaded fine, rebooted, gets to around 25% and now just the picture of the phone and the warning triangle...
This is only the 2nd OTA update I've had, the first bricked my phone and had to send it back - hopefully this isn't a repeat of that 😐

Just for information for anyone else that finds this thread with the same red triangle + exclamation mark. If this happens too you press and hold the the volume up key then tap the power button. A menu will appear (along with the install error that occurred). The menu should be on "Reboot". If not use the volume up key to select it and then tap the power button again. Your phone will then restart (to a pre-update attempt state).

Spoke to o2 today. They referred me to HTC on 0845 8900079. Called them and they have suggested a hard (factory) reset then upgrade straight from there.
This is going to take me a while backing up etc so will try this when I have time. Failing that they said to call back and they'd try to sort it out over the phone as failing a reset it could be hardware at fault. Either way, you all have the number now and they sound confident they can sort it.
Cheers

The actual error is:

Assert Failed: getprop("ro.cid") == "00000000" ||
getprop("ro.cid") == "11111111" ||
getprop("ro.cid") == "22222222" ||
getprop("ro.cid") == "33333333" ||
getprop("ro.cid") == "44444444" ||
getprop("ro.cid") == "55555555" ||
getprop("ro.cid") == "66666666" ||
getprop("ro.cid") == "77777777" ||
getprop("ro.cid") == "88888888" ||
getprop("ro.cid") == "99999999" ||
getprop("ro.cid") == "O2___102"
I assume my phone's "ro.cid" is not one of the ones in the list. It does not display what my phones "ro.cid" string is, but I about to search to see if it can be found.
I really don't want to factory reset it as people I know with HTC Desire's that have carried out the update cannot see what has changed! So I am wondering if it is worth the effort?

I don't think factory reset will work.
The update is looking for an O2 Germany phone "O2___102". Where as my phone returns ro.cid of "O2___001" which is O2 UK. This is coded into the ROM of the phone so it will not change after a reset!
Others are reporting the same issue on other forums. O2 IE forum they are saying it is a HTC ROM and their problem, but the file contains O2 and DE which is O2 Germany. I now from past experience that O2 support for Android tends to originate from Germany. O2 UK are blinkered to iPhones.
There is a way to change your County ID, but it involves rooting the phone and a fair bit of messing about installing bits of software and firmwares!

Exactly same issue here with my Desire,
update downloads and then on reboot the install fails about 25% in and the red triangle of death occurs.
Hope O2 will acknowledge the problem and get a fix sorted.

Anyone have any idea what this update is for? And, would o2 replace my handset based on this update failing?

"New features and improved performance" according to the message on my phone about the upgrade.
I tried twice with no success.

HTC suggested that it could be corrupt SD files and suggested that I backup and format the card. Here is their response...
Thank you for contacting HTC regarding your HTC Desire.
I understand that the recent system update does not work, it downloads, then starts to update then crashes at the same point each time ( 25% through, then stops).
I am sorry the system update doesn't install. I believe the reason for this could be related to the SD
card corrupted files.
In order to fix the issue you can copy the SD content to the PC by setting the phone as disk drive. After this format the SD card to start from fresh.
How to format the SD.
From setting > SD & phone storage > Unmount SD > OK > Erase SD card >Tap Erase everything. The memory card has been formatted.
If needed you can also hard reset the phone to set it to factory default settings.

Having done that I was faced with exactly the same problem.
I also deleted a bunch of apps and freed up over 50MB of internal storage.
Regardless of whether the 'System Enhancements' are really worth it, I like everything to work properly and hate the idea of there being a bug in the system. Also, will this potentially cause problems with any future updates as it will be queued in front of them?
Next thing to try is a factory reset but I am reluctant to do that for obvious reasons.
I will keep a close eye on this thread in anticipation of a fix.

Same here - received a 20 Mb update this morning, gave the same cid.ro error, not rooted, only OTA to 2.2 last year, didn't brick. Low on space, but wouldn't cause an assertion error - CJPHTCDesire's suggestion that it is looking for a German phone seems likely (I've not researched the facts), but if it is the case, I'm guessing a discussion between O2 and HTC about who's responsibility it is to make sure the UK OTA update has the UK ro.cid code in it...

We need to find out where this update has originated from. Is it from HTC or O2. They then need to modify it so that O2 UK customers can install it. That assumes that the update is valid for non Germany O2 customers...
I have emailed HTC with full details of the update file. The error and the ro.cid details of my phone and asked them if this is their update or O2's.
