Email from @mediamessaging.o2.co.uk?

I have received an email from @mediamessaging.o2.co.uk saying that the number 0779******* has sent me a picture message. There is an attachment of 69bytes named id-0000.txt. I have never received one of these emails before and am wondering if it is a genuine email from o2 or a possible malicious email. Has anyone else had one of these?

Thanks! It's always rather worrying when you get a rather nondescript attachment file name and it's only 69 bytes. Especially when the email doesn't carry any kind of o2 logo etc.

did you recognise the number it came from as if not I would still be suspect of the attachment.

Mystery solved! The mobile number was for someone I correspond with by email but did not have their mobile number in my contacts. The attachment was a text message they meant to send via email from their phone! Thanks for all your comments and advice, much appreciated.

These messages are circulating again...!!!

I've recently recived a similar message from +447711893066@mediamessaging.o2.co.uk accompained by this email message:

Here's a picture message you've been sent from 07711888963.

You can send a message back from your mobile phone. But don't reply to
this
email.

(Word document attached)

The mail doesnt appear to be sending to any particular recipent, only saying "Hello" and for the eagle eyed amongst you, you may have notived the number in the address and the number in the message are completely different.

For those of you unsure, your right to be so... DO NOT OPEN IT!

The only message in this thread was a genuine one.

Our organisation blocked 138 emails today from random phone numbers all the same as this email.

All have a +4477118{then 5 random numbers}@mediamessaging.o2.co.uk email address and all appear to have a .doc attachment.

The IP address they are coming from changes for each email as well.

The important thing for people to be aware of is to NEVER open the attachment in an email you are not expecting, not least in this case where you don't recognise the phone number sending the email.

Some of the IP Addresses where the emails are originating:

181.15.164.187 - Argentina

188.85.253.43 - Spain

85.105.156.42 - Turkey

59.148.236.180 - Hong Kong

203.174.12.18 - Indonesia

179.99.64.177 - Brazil

Weirdly, all of the email addresses these emails were sent to do actually exist so it looks as though a scammer somewhere has gotten hold of a mailing list somewhere and is now sending out these malicious emails.
