Cruising - anyone else been fleeced by O2?

Anonymous
Not applicable

Just been on a cruise, turned phone on to Airplane mode to avoid charges. Was told by O2 it was fine to leave data turned on! Bill shows Iceland charges of over £40, despite it being on the list covered by O2 travel. Never used phione at all when Onwaves network was showing. Anyone else feel they have been badly advised??

Had long online chat the other day and was promised a response, but no joy so far!! Meanwhile they have taken the money out of my bank.

@Anonymous Cruise liners operate their own networks so it won’t be o2 at fault. You need to contact the cruise people I think

If you feel badly advised make a complaint http://www.o2.co.uk/how-to-complain although you should of had warnings about the on board prices from the shipping company.

This doesn't make sense.  If you have left your iPhone in flight mode the whole time then there is no way it can connect unless you have accidentally switched it off.

ive been on many ships with its own networks and also aircraft with there's all over the world.  I've never ever had any charges from the ships or aircraft I've been on with leaving phone in flight mode.

I did get get charges when I switched flight mode off and i received a SMS from the liner / aircraft of the charges and I knew what to expect.

This has absolutely nothing to do with o2, but how mobile networks on cruise ships work and plane mobile networks work, and charging works, which has been the same since mobile roaming first began...

"Onwaves" network wouldn't have been showing if phone was in flight mode, so clearly it wasn't.
Your phone will use data in the background automatically, regardless if you use the phone or not.

This is what didn't make sense.  There is no way of charges if phone was in flight mode.

Turned it on when I knew I was in port, received text from O2 welcoming me to Iceland and saying Data etc. was £1.99 a day. As soon I was away at sea I turned it back on to Flight mode
