Gutted, got the new iPhone 5 just over a week ago but not that impressed with it as don't find it much different to the 4 : ( wasn't advised by anyone that I only had 7 days ; (

You could get it unlocked if it's on contract and sell it to put the money towards something else.

Girl in the O2 shop wasn't very helpful either, even though I waited patiently for her to notice I was waiting to be seen to whilst she finished texting on her own phone!!

It doesn't. Just keep your sim card to put into a new phone.
