Hey everyone,

A recent news article has sighted a study suggesting that banning out-of-hours emails could potentially do more harm then good.

The study by University of Sussex researchers found that a ban could be helpful for some staff but could also stop some people completing work goals causing stress. The idea is that employees need the freedom to reply to emails in their own time so they don't feel overwhelmed when in the office. The authors of the study advised a flexible approach by employers to need the needs of staff.

This study comes after a recent ban in France of out-of-hours emails.

What do you think on out of office emails? Do you think it's unfair to expect employees to be 'always on' or do you think it's helpful to be able to catch up with things at home? Let us know your thoughts below!

I've got customers all over the world and on very different time zones so I'd be very grateful to anyone who can tell me when I'm "out of hours" ?
I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

I think it's very much up to the individual and the job they do.

Some people would be even more stressed knowing that when the out of hrs embargo was over, they would be inundated with emails expecting immediate attention.

I no longer work but do have reason to be in contact with a few specialist medical staff in the NHS.

I know if I email them out of hours, I will get an auto reply stating they are 'out of the office until 8am and they will be in contact after that time'.

That suits me fine.

@MI5@Cleoriff I agree I think it's very much dependent on the sort of job you have. Whilst I don't think it's fair to expect the average office worker to be answering emails at 10pm they should still have that option, just not enforced.
