Sorry for your loss @JRS 

Contracts have a minimum term, and then move on to be a rolling plan that continues until they are cancelled.

Normally this is done by contacting customer services, or using a PAC/STAC code to move the number to another provider.

o2 has a help page for what to do when a person passes:
