Just to clarify you'll need a micro SIM card for the iPhone 4s

You should just be able to reset the network settings and the phone should pick up the settings off the sim card.

If the phone hasn't changed hands yet it would be worth asking your friend to fill out the form at http://www.o2.co.uk/unlockmyiphone as it would be free for him to unlock the phone whereas it would cost you £15 (and you'd have to wait a year).

Would help with any resale value should you sell it in the future

Great advice @davethorp

Another procedure is he/she will need to remove his / her Apple I.d or you won't be able to add yours and download apps and update the iOS etc.

The iPhone is an exception to the 12 month rule. They will unlock it straight away whether P&G or contract.

Fair enough. Would still be of benefit for the OP to try and get it unlocked for free on their friend's contract sim rather than pay £15 to do it on their PAYG one
