Am almost ready to upgrade my iPhone. What do I need to do with old phone before buying, to prevent any data loss? Currently run iCloud storage, but what about all the Apps, etc?

If you make an encrypted backup in iTunes, all data will be saved, including apps and passwords etc.
Just don't forget the password you encrypt the backup with.

Hi @Anonymous jusr back up your current phone to iTunes on a pc or iCloud then once you have your new iPhone then put your current backup onto your new phone
