iphone/charger electrical fault

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hi since at the moment seem to be getting nowhere with 02 customer service thought id try here.

My iphone charger cable has went a brownish tint at both sides and split completely at the top where it connects to the phone, presumably from the heat. I have tried another cable and it seems to be doing the same discolouration. So is this the chargers or is there something wrong with the phone too? It has left me wary of using it especially with stories of someone in china being electrocuted by an iphone.

Its an iphone 3GS by the way. Can you tell me the next step to report this, 02 support seems all over the place at the moment.

Hi,

Like you I have read the stories connected to the recent issues that have occurred in China and I'm sure Apple will be on the case !

Some further information has come up about this situation too..

http://www.idownloadblog.com/2013/07/19/unauthorized-charger-blame/

Seems the user may have been using a 3rd party charger.

If the iphone is working fine then I wouldn't be too overly worried and try to connect the two issues.

Obviously the cables etc should not go discoloured and even though your iPhone is no longer under Apples 12 month warranty, the Geniuses or Specialists in your local Apple Store will still be able to help and advise.

Apple do provide Apple care if you purchase it within the 1st year of owning your phone but I'm loathed to pay an extra £55.

I've read some countries are challenging Apples One Year Warranty as it really should be two years IMO !

I use the original cable, one also bought from an 02 shop and one bought from a £1 shop and all operate Ok on my iPhone 5.

What I'm trying to say is I found out that one doesn't have to pay £15 for a cable !

Try your local bargain pound shops ?

I've also known Apple to swap out hardware even when out of warranty !

I hope you get sorted soon and can continue to use your iPhone.

The 3gs is an awesome solid version IMO.

Is the iphone in its 12 month warranty?

If yes book a genius bar appointment at nearest apple store.

If not you will have to buy a new charger / lead to see what is wrong

Are you using the genuine Apple cable that came with your phone or is it an aftermarket one?

Unfortunately you have a nearly 2 year old phone that sounds like it has developed a possible hardware fault.

The only thing O2 could do is send it for repair, but the chances are that it will just come back saying there has been water damage (see other threads about the repair company!).

Its out of warranty with Apple who wont replace the phone now, so I think your best bet is to struggle on and see out the end of your contract and get a new phone. Or alternatively do a fast-track upgrade and pay off your remaining months so you can get a new phone now.

thanks for the answer. well the 3GS is older than two years i guess but seems apple had had a few issues like this recently.

I really don't see why i should pay the remaining parts of my contract though when its a possible damaged phone with an electrical issue.

you'd think when its a reported electrical fault 02 would be on top of it but no, their service is now appalling.

So by that logic, if anything electrical that you own (TV, fridge, etc) that is out of warranty develops a fault it should be fixed by the supplier anyway?

Or are you aiming for a new phone just because there is a problem with it charging?

Why not pay off the remaining part of your contract? Means you get a new phone sooner! Seems like a no-brainer to me!

isn't that a bit different? im still paying a contract for this phone. so 02 get me to sign for 24 months but if the phone is out of 12 months warranty they don't have any responsibility any more? a tv and fridge when out of 12 months warranty might be included with house insurance.

some people don't have the money right away to pay off the remaining part of their contract either. im not aiming to get a new phone im just aiming for good service , that is all. i mean seeing the other threads about the repair company puts you off too.

someone has advised me to take it to 02 store and demand that while its getting repaired that they give me a replacement phone in the meantime. the guy on the 02 chat i spoke to earlier said just pop your phone off for repair. oh yeh ill just do that and not have a phone for ages.
