I'm not sure what anybody can suggest as I assume the Apple bods would have done everything that we can suggest in the settings menu.

One last suggestion I can make is that you backup your phone and then try resetting it, but set it up as a new phone. During the setup process, when it prompts you to log in with your Apple ID, skip that step so that the phone is ready to go but not logged into any Apple service.

Then try turning on just iMessage but don't sign in with an Apple ID. It should still try and activate with just your mobile number, so see if you get any success.

If it doesn't work, then you can restore your phone to as it is now.

Thanks for the response but i can't even see the option to sign in or out of my apple id in the message settings.

I spent over an hour on the phone to 2 different people from O2 last night and neither could come up with a solution. I've tried taking out the sim card and cleaning it, resetting all settings, turning imessage on and off and still no joy. They seemed to think there may be a problem with the handset.

Any other suggests welcome.

Nah I doubt it's a problem with the handset. I used to get it all the time.

Mine used to work after a hard reset could try that.

Ill have a look see if I can find another solution for you.

Copied from a nsfw/apple endorsed website so I won't link it.

Step 1: Make sure that you are using a valid Apple ID.
Step 2: Make sure that you are running a good WiFi connection or cellular (3G connection)
Step 3: Make sure that your date, time, and time zone are correctly set.
Step 4: Turn iMessage off and then Turn on again in Go Settings –> Messages.

Step 5: Open iMessage, under the message settings, a popup message will appear saying “your carrier may charge for SMS messages then select “cancel”. iMessage activates itself after you have clicked cancel. But this would not fully activate itself. Instead, you activated iMessage via e-mail, so you can only send messages with your e-mail address.
Step 6: Try restarting your device. Switch it off then On again.
Step 7: Turn off iMessage and FaceTime. Go to Settings –> Phone. Check if your number is reflected in “My Number” and restart your device.
Step 8: Settings –> General –> Restrictions –> Accounts and make sure that you selected “Allow Changes” and enable the FaceTime to work.
Step 9: Reset your network settings check our tutorial here

If Liquid's suggestion doesn't work, then go into Settings => Messages => "Send and Receive". You should see your Apple ID at the top. Tap on that and it will give you the option to sign out. Do that and then you can re-sign in your Apple ID for iMessage.

This shouldn't be marked as solved as none of the suggestions have worked. I've been into an Apple shop as suggested by the O2 helpline and they have said the issue is not with the handset but is a problem with O2.

I am also experiencing a problem with MMS messages going through where some have taken up to a week to go through and some that have failed to go through at all.

I'm not sure what else to do as O2 have said it's a handset issue and Apple have said the fault lies with O2, i feel like i'm going round in circles!

I'm using a 3gs so haven't got facetime. Have tried signing out and signing back in to my Apple id though and it didn't work.

Try putting the phone in aeroplane mode and switching back see if that helps.
