Apple do offer a mail in service. They will mail a box out to you which you pack your phone into and take to a post office. It normally arrives at Apple the next day and they will ship a replacement out to you which arrives the following day normally. This would leave you without the phone for 2 days if you time your mailings to occur during the week.

Sounds like warranty to me. If you do use the mail in service and Apple decide its not covered I think they will either contact you or just return the handset
