@Anonymous I've just been Googling and it seems there are various scratch removal products available, as well as plenty of tips for alternatives to try including toothpaste and talcum powder. Does appear to depend on how severe the scratches are and also the material from which the screen is made (plastic or glass). Would be interesting to know if anyone has tried any of these remedies and if so with what result.
Please do not try any such remedies unless and until you have definitely ruled out the possibility of any other solutions such as Insurance claims or repair by manufacturer etc.

Their used to be a tube of cream you could buy from mobile shops (may even still be available ) to remove light surface scratches , however I wouldn't do thus in a touch screen phone.
Quite agree with you BoB - I am surprised the OP's new iPhone did not have a screen protector fitted when supplied - or maybe Apple don't do that?

A jeweller could possibly polish out light scratches but it depends on what the OP wants to do.
Personally I wouldn't have used the phone at all without a screen protector on it first.

iPhones do come with front and rear plastic protectors on them but most remove them.
You know that personally?
