my iPhone has just got hot and switched off , it now flashes the apple sign off and on when I try to charge and it won't turn on.

Try after it cools down.

On the iPhone hold down the Sleep/Wake Button and Home button together until the Apple Logo shows. Then On seeing this Apple Logo release both buttons ,and the iPhone will reset , which has been known to clear most glitches.

Are you using an original charger.

Are you jail broken ?

Do you play games on it extensively ?

You may need to seek help an an Apple Genius Bar via appointment to have a diagnostic run if it continues.

Sounds like a defective battery problem?

Try holding power and home key together and see if it resets.
If not I would suggest a visit to an apple store for a genius appointment.

Possibly an app causing issues but the reset should help.
