iPhone 12 unlocking

Hi, I recently purchased my friends unwanted upgrade which is an iPhone 12. He’s an O2 pay monthly customer, he’s reassured me that the phone is unlocked to all networks but I won’t know this until my daughter opens it up on Christmas Day, I’ve got no reason not to believe him I’d just like it if someone from O2 or in the know about this sort of thing could clarify this for me please. TIA

O2 have sold unlocked phones since 2018.

Easiest way to check is get a PAYG sim from another network and try it in the phone.

Edited to add, if it's an iPhone 12, it's unlocked.
