I recently lost my iphone and have temporarily replaced it with an Android phone but am sure I am missing multiple texts because iMessage is still active from my old phone.  How do I deactivate?

It deactivates when you sign out of your apple id on the phone.
If you can't access phone or didn't do that you will have to ask apple to help or see this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4005864?tstart=0

Like @Anonymous said. Apple have set up a dedicated website for this very reason. Before It would take a few days for their computers to readjust and many lost messages.
