An alternative would be to take the SIM to a second-hand 'phone shop or to CEX :-
CeX (UK) : Locate a CeX store (webuy.com)
You can then buy a cheap handset that the SIM will fit into.

Well actually nothing to lose so I will cut it up with a hacksaw and see how it goes and if it doesn't work well I just get a new pay-as-you-go Sim for him. Cheers all

Good thinking Batman, I'm always guilty of over-engineering things I was looking for the Dremel earlier!! Will try scissors first.

I thought you were joking about a hacksaw!!
Repair shops have proper sim cutters which you can also buy on Amazon.
I guarantee you will screw it up with scissors as the cut will distort the sim chip.

You don't need a hacksaw or dremel. Decent pair of scissors does the job perfectly, just trim up the final half millimetre with a bit of sandpaper or similar. Done quite a few of them in the micro>nano transition when a new phone turned up and had impatient kids (or impatient me!) wanting to use the new hotness.
As for the original credit-card sized SIM... that may not be as trimmable!
