For the last 3 weeks or so I have been unable to connect to Wi-Fi on my phone. The Wi-Fi connectivity icon is greyed out. I have re-set my network settings and re-set my phone (iPhone 4S) by pressing the centre button and the top button at the same time. Neither have helped.
This weekend I took my phone into an o2 shop and was told that it is a software issue which cannot be resolved until the next software update becomes available (perhaps a few weeks I'm told). The man confirmed that I am using the lastest software at the moment so this also is not the problem.
I received a text from o2 over the weekend to tell me that I have used over 80% of my data allowance which is not due to be renewed until 10 September. I am therefore likely to exceed my data allowance this month. I have been on my contract with o2 since February 2012 and I have never exceeded my data allowance; the only reason I am likely to do so this month is due to this technical problem. Can this problem be resolved?

Unfortunately, if it's an Apple hardware or software problem, it's nothing really to do with O2. If you're running out of data you can buy more to top up, but as it's an Apple issue, there wouldn't be anything O2 could do other than sell that extra data to you.

It's an iPhone 4S. I've tried all four steps and unfortunately it's still greyed out.

You could approach the retailer with a consumer law claim although mileage with this varies a lot depending on the retailer. Info at the following links:
