Want to use location services on iPhone when in France. Does this mean I will get large charges?

Hi
Going skiing in France and I have an app on my iPhone which can tell me where I am on the mountain so it must be some sort of GPS. It says I have to keep location services on. Does this mean I will get charged a lot and will I have to keep data roaming on? Thank you.

Hi,

Location services does need a data or wifi connection to work depending on the app being used.

a good explanation from another forum :

"It depends on the app that is using Location Services.

With the included Maps app, maps data is not stored locally on the iPhone. Maps data must be downloaded, which requires using cellular data when not connected to an available wi-fi network.

Location Services alone does not use data. It depends on the app being used that makes use of Location Services. I have a GPS turn by turn navigation app with maps data stored locally on the iPhone, so cellular data isn't required for the app to access maps data."

I'd suggest getting your phone unlocked as its free for contract customers or £15 for payg customers, and use a local sim.

Maybe different on iOS but on Android you don't need data on if you are using GPS which does not use data.
