Swapping from an iphone 3gs to an iphone 4gs

i have an iphone 3gs, im considering buying an iphone 4gs. I have a ay monthly deal at the moment. if i were to purchase an iphone 4gs would i be able to transfer my sim into the new phone and would it be ok if i did. i understand a micro sim is needed if so could i simply request one of these for my current contract?

For a further bit of help Jake, make sure you backup your 3GS with iTunes or iCloud, and then restore from this backup onto your new iPhone. It will then be like using your current phone restoring everything from apps, app data to texts and photos.

You can even get the sim free from your local O2 store and they will arrange the number transfer for you.
