So I have today visited my local O2 store to prove my age and after receiving this message;
'We've now confirmed your age and you should now be able to access 18 rated content. Note that Blackberry phones may take up to 24 hours'
I'm using an Iphone 4S and although it has now stopped redirecting me to the bango.net age verification page, it now redirects to the O2 mobile web page instead?!
Any ideas?

I would ring customer service and ask them to verify that the restriction has been removed.

Turn the phone on and off and it will work
