I'm having a nightmare trying to set up email on my iphone using my existing Virgin media account.
I have a #####@ntlworld.com email address and have tried the following settings.
Name - my name
Address - #####@ntlworld.com
Incoming mail server
Host Name - pop.ntlworld.com
User Name - my ntl username
Password - my ntl password
Outgoing mail server
SMTP - smtp.o2.co.uk
Host name - smtp.o2.co.uk
user name - my O2 user name
Password - my O2 password
With SSL off.
Still doesn't want to know. Can anyone suggest any alternative (and successfull) ways of doing this.

I was excited to receive my new iphone 5 recently only to find the email settings a problem like they always are!! Having spent what must be hours calling Virgin, O2 and Apple and getting nowhere i have decided to post this as i have the answer. Use the Cloud. Once you have set up the iCloud on your mobile and or iPad simply got to your emails within the Virgin mail on their web site. Click settings then forwarding. Enter your new iCloud email address and enable. This means that any emails coming in or out with show up on your Apple devices. Hope this helps someone, would have loved this kind of help from others but had to figure it out myself.

I set mine up as an Exchange account.
This will work through the google server. Just add your full email address as the user name and then your usual password. Server name is m.google.com, domain is blank and SSL is switched on. Works in push mode as per gmail.
The set up also shows contacts and calendar sync but not sure where they are on Virgin (NTL) so havent got those switched on.
PS I seem to recall that pop 3 will work but you have to send all outgoing mail through the o2 smtp server on smtp.o2.co.uk and have to add your o2 log in details to the smtp side (I think there is an option for adding that during setup). I dont use pop as I prefer push, so cant remember exactly. Its something to do with o2 not allowing mail to be sent via anothers outgoing server.

I use my virgin media account on my iphone it was just a case of using email address and password to get it going Make sure you have imap enabled in your main virgin media email settings.
