Look here http://community.o2.co.uk/t5/Pay-Monthly-and-Pay-Go/Self-help-guide-Is-the-network-down-for-me-or-ev...

And

Occasionally turning the phone off , clean the SIM card and battery pull (phone model dependant) and turn the phone back on clears lots of glitches.

Does the status bar say NO SERVICE ?

If so where did you get the phone from.

If from a private source check it's not been IMEI blocked by using a service called CHECKMEND

http://www.checkmend.com/uk/

if from O2 ring O2 to have your account checked.

The online checker may not always be fully up to date, so any recent faults may take time to be displayed.
Easiest way to check is to see if others on O2 have a signal where you don't, if so the network is OK and you have an issue with either your phone or sim card.
Trying your sim in a different phone would indicate where the fault was in that case.

Can you try your sim in another phone as a process of elimination ? O2 shops provide free sim adapters to make your nano sim into a micro or normal sim.

How old is your iPhone 5?

You can't hot swap a sim card so you will have to use an app to power off the phone then plug it in to a charger to turn it back on again.
