Sorry, I’m a bit rubbish.

Only got phone today and can not update to IOS11+ whatever

I just keep being told ‘Unable to Check for Update’

Am I missing something obvious?

How are you trying to update Phone?
Easiest way I guess is to connect to iTunes, that way any phone data connection issues will be bypassed.

Is the iPhone a 5s or a new SE? Have you tried a factory restore then try updating
