On looking at some of the other Network Forums and googling this seems to me that when all the generic suggestions are exhausted it could come to a Network glitch / congestion.
Frustrating at it is for some.

Remove your sim and give it a clean with a soft dry cloth.
And in some cases going into an O2 shop and having the sim swapped helps.

Hold the Top Button and Home Button until the Apple Logo appears, and then let go of both. Your iPhone will reset.
And or ;
Settings , General , Reset , Reset Network Settings.

Sounds like a definite iOS/O2 problem.

Not an iPhone.
Process of elimination.
I can only confirm I'm on iOS 7 - iPhone 5s with no issues. Carrier settings : O2 15.6

iPhone 5 not 5s
iOS version is 7.1.1
Carrier O2 16.0
Yes I think these issues may have started since the iOS update so that could indicate an O2 / iOS ?
I don't have another phone to try my SIM card in unfortunately, but that was a good suggestion thanks.
I will go and clean my SIM card.
I have reset my phone, reluctant to reset network settings as I'll loose all the network security codes I've entered.
If O2 give me a new sin card, will that mean I lose my phones number ?
I've also noticed that sometime iMessages go to my ipad or iPhone but not both, which is an issue as I don't have my ipad with me all the time and I miss the message as I doesn't always show on my phone.
