You would have to pay for the remaining months to do that.
Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy another phone to use with your existing contract?

In all honesty you can do neither. To upgrade you would have to pay off the remainder of your contract and do the same if you wish to terminate the contract.
You need to chase the insurance company and make sure you abided by the stipulations inserted into the T&Cs.
Failing a pay out from the insurance you would need to purchase a new phone at your own cost and use your contract sim in it.

Yes I did get a new sim from O2 but wasn't sure whether I could use this with another phone other than an iPhone.
They are expensive and I'm waiting to see whether the insurance company will pay me anything even if they don't replace the phone. But they are taking a long time to decide
