I update to 6.1.1 after no warnings not to & phone went into recovery mode & asked to be plugged into iTunes. Now have wiped phone. Missing back up. Apple told me if there is not enough space for update phone may go into "recovery mode" it did not warn me of this.

Strange

Personally I have never run my hard drive so there is next to no space.

I dont know if its the same with phone memory, but I would never advise using more than 75% of the hard drive.

By not finishing the install due to insufficient space you've essentially bricked the phone:(.

You'd of thought it would check for the space requirements like any normal software does first.

The main thing is the missing back up. Any idea what happened? Do you not use the cloud?

Thanks for the replies. The phone had been a bit slow & had frozen on the Apple logo a few times when I switched it on. There was no warning or message to say not enough space for update. After I started update within 30 seconds it asked to be plugged into iTunes then 30 seconds later it was completely wiped.
No I didn't use the iCloud (I will now) I had a back up on my hard drive but that has vanished.

I wonder if iTunes has forgotten where it put it:/

Try searching your hard driver for

.mdbackup

Or have a look in the following directories;

Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/

Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\

Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\

If you find anything let us know and we can show you how to get the back up and iTunes reacquainted.

It somtimes screws up on my pc as well. No idea why though:(

I tried that. The oldest it is showing is the one at the time of the wipe so factory reset.

You say oldest? You have more than one of them?

Could you copy the file size/dates in here? I wonder if it may be possible to recall the useful data from the backup. I know a piece of software that can read and restore to the phone. You could then create a new back up afterwards.

I tried the update at 01:34am so the oldest showing is 01:35am There are some others after that time which were me trying again so the same reset state. Not an older back up. I know I had an older back up on my External Hard Drive. I had been refusing to update to iTunes 11 due to bad reviews of the interface. I updated other software & as far as I knew not iTunes 11 but when I plugged in the iPhone, iTunes 11 opened up. I'm not sure if this may be connected.

Appears someone else had a similar issue. An old backup was found in the previous iTunes folder.

I don't see why iTunes would of done this though:(
