I have tried to use the volume keys and hold the lock key but still nothing....

I have plugged the charger in but it makes no diffenece.

Is there a number I can call o2 from a landline?

If the steps in the linked apple document don't work then I'd suggest the following

If you have an Apple store near you it may be worth making an appointment with the Genius Bar. If the handset is faulty you should walk out with a replacement

If not you can have a box mailed out to you by Apple to send the handset back to them to be repaired or replaced. This will take a few days though

Both methods are probably faster than approaching O2
