It hasn't, the phone normally switches to GSM when it goes to sleep.

O2 cannot charge you for wi-fi use.

Switch the data off and you'll be ok:

Hi,

I would suggest your daughter looks at data bolt on's or have a tariff with a data allowance included.

This can be changed in My02 and would become live on her next anniversary date or ring 4445 from her mobile {£0.25p per call}, to ask Customer Services to change her tariff.

If not she runs the risk of paying £1 per day for 50mb.

Yeah it would seem that the iPhone has switched over to mobile data when the iPhone has been in sleep.

From the sounds of things, wherever you purchased the iPhone 5 from has not advised you about having a data bolt on for your iPhone. With smartphones its advisable to have a data bolt on. Sending iMessagesfor example to other iPhone users, uses a tiny bit of data, and if you don't have a data bolt on, the data costs can mount up.

Cheapest data bolt on is £3 per month. This amount would be taken out of her credit every month. So you would need to ensure that there was enough credit for this to be taken.

Sadly this is a common complaint with iPhones on iOS6. (I ran into the same issue myself)

The way round it is to make sure mobile data is switched off when at home and connected to wifi and as others have said make sure you have a data plan in place for when away from home.

Remember that Siri needs a data connection (whether mobile data of wifi) in order to work too.

If your daughter likes sending and receiving picture messages {MMS} a data connection is required too.
