Hi all!

My son currently has a giffgaff pay as you go sim, on this tariff:

500MB 4G UK data + 250 UK mins + Unlimited UK texts for £7.50 a month (on a recurring top up)

This sim is being used in old iPhone 4.

He will be going to France soon, with his school and are looking to get him an iPhone 5C, to take with him (the iPhone 4 is ancient and REALLY slow!).

Will his existing GIffGaff sim, work ok in a new Pay As You Go O2 iPhone 5C?

Yes, 5p.
The expensive part is calling from the UK.

...ok cheers for all your help @MI5 appreciated. Thanks!

I guess I will have just have to ensure all his apps, which may use data, are turned off, before he goes, so they don't eat into his data/credit!

Definitely, turn off mobile data and just use wifi for data access.
Also, if he is going on a ferry, turn OFF the phone whilst on or in the vicinity of the ship.

...he's going by plane!

Turning off mobile data just means that he won't be able to use the internet (which  includes any apps which may use internet), right?

He'll still be able to text and make phone calls, yes?

Texts and calls will work fine.
If he gets wifi he can use data too.

....but I guess, if I  DO turn off Mobile Data, I would no longer be able to see his location via the 'Find My iPhone' app or the 'Find Friends' app on my iPhone (I'd like to be able to see his location once in a while!)?!

It would still track his last location when connected to wifi but not necessarily in real time, no.
