Turn off voicemail (1760) before you leave the UK.
You can check call charges here and costs vary between Pay Monthly and Pay and Go:
http://www.o2.co.uk/support/internationalandtravel
Also disable mobile data on your phone and use wi-fi where possible.
If are expecting to make or receive many calls get a local sim on arrival if your phone is unlocked.
Have a great trip, we will expect to see the pictures when you get back!

Also before you go you might want to call customer service to make sure roaming is enabled on your sim card. There have been a couple of posters on here who have had trouble making calls due to this.

You haven't said what kind of phone you have, but I presume it must be an iPhone as you've posted in the Apple section. If you have an iPhone 5 you will not be able to unlock it at the moment. If your phone is older and if you have the time before you go, unlock your phone and get a PAYG sim from either AT&T or T-Mobile when you are in the US. If you roam in the US on your O2 sim you will come back to a very large bill when you return to the UK.
