Disgraceful is the only word for it.
They took orders and money for stock they didn't have (and no clue when they were going to get) and promising timescales they knew they couldn't achieve.
But it's ok cause we may get extra data that we don't need while they collect interest on everyone's upfront payments. That is just swell.

I agree @StevenB14 - absolutely abhorrent behaviour!! And they knew 5 days before release they weren't going to get enough yet still took money!

If they came out and gave a proper apology, were honest about the screw up and offered discount on the airtime part of the contracts for a few months I think people would be more willing to wait for their phones.

Update as of 10:00 27/09/2016 - We’ve continued to work with Apple and are pleased to say our stock situation for iPhone is improving. We will continue to complete our pre-orders in the order in which they were placed.
We are still in shortage of the following models:
Our customers that have pre-ordered these models are guaranteed to receive the very first phones that hit our warehouse.
We are sorry to say that even though our pre-order iPhones are being received, we still have a shortage from Apple on our back orders. Any customers who will not be receiving their back order as planned will receive a text today to inform them of the latest status. We’ve been in touch with customers who were given a delivery date of 16, 23, 26 or 27 September, and will keep them updated when more stock arrives.
