Can you only buy an iphone5 if you are due an upgrade....no buying it outright??

Hello everybody,

I went to an o2 shop today to buy an iphone 5. If successful, I was then going to recycle my iPhone4s. After checking my account status, the assistant told me that they couldn't sell me one because I wasn't due for an upgrade. I said that I wanted to buy the phone, then recycle etc (online/or in shop) but she said I was unable to do so. 

I'm on a Pay Monthly contract with o2 and have been for several years. 

So the question being....buying an iphone5 outright is not an option?

You can buy one from apple outright then just put your sim(after swap to nano sim) into your phone.

Voila iPhone 5 on your current contract:)

Obviously your insurance wouldn't work though if you have it with O2

Cant you buy it from o2 on payg and do the same if apple have none available

02 are not selling the ip5 on payg yet as far as I'm aware.

It took two weeks of trying to reserve one at my local apple store as at the moment you also cannot just walk into an apple store to get one sim free either.

I paid £529 for my 16gb sim free model.

Awesome phone.

According to the o2 website you can buy it on payg but is costs 549 for the 16gb model
